NBCOPA POSITION ON MILITARY MEMBERS & CME’S

It has come to the attention of the NBCOPA Board that there are a few members who have had problems with CMEs and their requirement during deployment in the military.

After discussion, the Board has come to an agreement in regard to allowing a moratorium during the period of time that an individual is deployed in continuous service to his/her country. We will require that the individual being deployed submit to the CME Chairman the date of deployment and the date of return from service. During this period of time, there will be no requirement to continue submitting CMEs, and the individual will maintain their certificate and certification during this period of time. If the individual is deployed for 12 months, 18 months, or 24 months, the moratorium will run for this same length of time.

The individual will have that same amount of time to submit a continuation of their CMEs requirements to fulfill recertification. Any courses taken while deployed in the military relating to the healthcare industry can also be submitted for consideration of recertification. It is the intent of the NBCOPA Board and the CME Committee not to place an additional burden on those individuals who have sacrificed their time and put their lives on the line in an effort to serve our country. It is the Boards intent to provide an opportunity of smooth transition between military commitments and the civilian medical practice.
